On March 14th, the 2010 International Program took place at Mukunoki Center here in Seika Town. This event, which centers around international exchange through cooking, gave each participant the opportunity to help in making various national dishes from around the world while communicating with people from all over the world in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. This year, national cuisine from China (pastry desert), Thailand (soup), Japan (chirashizushi and oshizushi), and America (southern barbecue, hush puppies, and pork rinds) were prepared. After the cooking and eating, an arts and crafts corner was set up where participants could make calendars and fold origami. Ending off the event was a lively game of fruits basket with participants off various ages and nationalities, making for an interesting game that made everyone laugh.

At this event I learned a lot of new things about other parts of the world from the personal experiences as presented by the recipients of the Seika Town Overseas Experience Grant about their studies while abroad, as well as talking with other participants from China and Thailand. Of course I also enjoyed being able to introduce my own home state’s local cuisine. All in all, it was a great time getting to know all sorts of interesting, internationally minded people from my community.

「国際交流プログラム2010」

　「国際交流プログラム2010」が3月14日（日）にむくのきセンターで行われました。国際交流プログラム2010とは、参加者がさまざまな国の料理を各国の出身者と一緒に作ったり、ゆったり雰囲気の中コミュニケーションをしたりする機会を与えるイベントでした。今年は、中国のパイ風のお菓子､タイのスープ、日本のちらし寿司や押し寿司、アメリカの南部バーベキュー、付け合せのハッシュパッピース、とポークラインズのスナックの、それぞれの国特有の料理を作りました。満腹になった後は、手作りコーナーでカレンダーを作ったり折り紙を折ったりしました。そして、フルーツバスケットでは、国籍や年代を超え、参加者の笑いをさそって大いに盛り上がりました。

　私はこのイベントに参加することで、中国人やタイ人の参加者と話し合ったり、精華町海外体験補助金を受けた留学生の発表を聞いたりして、人々の個人的な経験を通して世界の事をより深く知ることがきました。もちろん、自分の出身の特有料理を紹介させていただいて、とても嬉しく思っています。やはり、色々な面白い、国際感覚を持つ地域の人々と知り合えて、とても楽しい時間を過ごしました。

Girl’s Festival

On Sunday, March 7th, A special kick-off fair was held at Keihanna Plaza counting down the 600 days until the week long “26th National Cultural Festival: Kyoto 2011.” One of the events held at the fair was an introduction of the Japanese Doll Festival, or hinamatsuri, by the international exchange organization Piece of Peace. On March 3rd, dolls dressed in traditional Heian period clothing are customarily displayed on a five or seven-tiered platform. In the past, people used to float paper dolls down the river, believing it would take away bad luck. Today, in addition to displaying dolls, Japanese often eat colored, bite-sized rice crackers known as hina-arare, and chirashizushi on this day.

Perhaps many people who have an interest in Japanese culture or have lived in Japan for a while have seen the display of these dolls before, but the highlight of this event was the fitting of a Heian period court dress known as junihitoe, the same wardrobe that the displayed dolls are dressed in, something that most Japanese have never even seen before. Clothing this 16kg, 12-layer robe on to the model was an elaborate process that required two people to tuck and fasten each layer to size, taking about 30 minutes in total. Being able to see this was quite a fun experience.

ひな祭り

　3月7日、日曜日に、平成23年に開催される第26回国民文化祭・京都2011に向けて、６００日前のキックオフイベントがけいはんなプラザで開催されました。このイベントの一つの行事として、Piece of Peaceという国際交流団体がひな祭りを紹介しました。3月3日に、平安時代の十二単を着ているひな人形を、５段か７段の壇の上に飾ります。昔、人々は、人形が災いを持ち去ってくれると信じて、紙の人形を川に浮かべて流していました。現在、ひな人形の飾りをはじめ、日本人はひなあられという小さなもち米の和菓子やちらし寿司を食べる習慣があります。

　日本文化に興味を持つ人々や、特にしばらく日本に住んでいる人々は、ひな人形の飾りをみたことがあるとは思いますが、ひな人形の着装と同じ十二単をモデルに着せる実演は、日本人にもこれを見るのはめったにないチャンスなので、イベントの見所となりました。この１６ｋｇもある十二単の着装は、着るのに2人も要る複雑な作業で、30分もかかりました。私にとってもとても楽しい経験でした。

8th Annual Japanese Message Contest

On December 20th, Seika Town held the 8th Annual Japanese Message Contest. The number of participants more than doubled from last year to a total of 13 presenters representing China, Canada, India, and Malaysia. The speeches reflected their views and impressions of life in Japan, their hardships communicating in a foreign language, and even shared a few tips for effectively studying English. The guests really seemed interested in hearing an outside perspective on Japanese society and culture. For everyone who came, the event helped foster mutual understanding about our different cultures, and most importantly about living together in a multicultural society.

After the speeches, two Seika Town Overseas Experience Grant recipients gave presentations about their experiences studying abroad in the USA and France. Next, the audience and participants were treated to a performance of the Wizard of Oz from the members of the Seika Nishi Middle School International Club. I was impressed by all of the hard work that the students put into memorizing their lines in English. The club also introduced their exchange project of posters introducing Japanese school life and the Seika Town Area. They will be sending the posters to be displayed in a middle school in Norman, Oklahoma, the sister city of Seika.

Finally, via votes from audience members and the panel of judges, Kin Yuuran from China was announced as the winner with her speech「うんじゃなくて、はい」(Not “Un,” “Hai”), discussing cultural differences as expressed in Chinese and Japanese verbalism. The event gave everyone the opportunity to enjoy cross-cultural exchange in a warm atmosphere via the communication of words and music. Hope to see you there next year!

　外国人による日本語のメッセージコンテスト　「第8回外国人による日本語のメッセージコンテスト」が、１２月２0日に開催されました。昨年のコンテストに比べて今回は出場者が2倍以上になって、中国、カナダ、インド、マレーシアを代表する合計13人が参加しました。日本に暮らして感じたこと、考えさせられたこと、英語の勉強の苦労など、様々な実体験を交じえ、発表しました。視聴者は、外国人から見た日本の社会や文化の意見を聞いて楽しんでいるようでした。異文化の理解を深め、多文化の共生に役立つイベントになりました。

　メッセージコンテストの出場者の発表が終わったら、「精華町海外体験補助金」の受給者による米国とフランスでの留学の体験を２人の方に聞きました。次、視聴者も出場者も、精華西中学校国際交流部による「オズの魔法使い」の英語劇を楽しみました。英語のセリフをじっくり暗記した熱心な努力に感動しました。国際交流部は精華町や日本の学校生活などを紹介したものも展示しました。これを精華町の姉妹都市である米国オクラホマ州ノーマン市にある中学校で展示していただく予定があります。

　
　視聴者の投票と審査員の審査により、最優秀賞は、中国語と日本語での言葉遣いに現れた文化の違いについて発表した、中国出身の金幽蘭さんの「うんじゃなくて、　はい」に決定されました。このイベントを通し、楽しい雰囲気の中、コミュニケーションをし、異文化交流をすることができました。来年はぜひあなたも参加されてはいかがでしょうか。

2009 Seika Town Kids Festival

　　On Saturday October 17th the Seika Town Education Committee held the annual Children’s Festival at Mukunoki Center. Along with the volunteers with Seika Global Network, I helped set up a corner where the children could make their own dream catcher. The atmosphere was very exciting and full of energy, so it was a very fun way to spend the day.

　　

　　A dream catcher is a traditional Native American talisman that protects children from having bad dreams when you hang it above their bed. Seika’s sister city, Norman, Oklahoma, has a large Native American population and thus has been heavily influenced by Native American arts and culture. Houses and cars are often decorated with dream catchers. I was happy I was able to promote our sister city of Norman while I played with the children, all via making dream catchers with them. Of course it is impossible to teach the children in depth about Native American culture and its relation ship to Norman, Oklahoma in just 10 minutes or so, but if the children could learn even one new thing I was happy.

　　I think having a special event just for children where they can play different games, and experience different activities is a great thing. All of the kids were so cute and so much fun to play with, this was definitely a day that I will always remember.

こども祭り 　　

　１０月１７日、むくのきセンターで精華町教育委員会主催のこども祭りが開催されました。私は、せいかグローバルネットのみなさんと、子どもたちが「ドリームキャッチャー」を作る体験を企画しました。祭りはとてもにぎやかな雰囲気で楽しかったです。
　

　「ドリームキャッチャー」というのは、ベッドの上につるすことで、眠っている子どもを悪夢から守ってくれるネイティブアメリカンの伝統的なお守りです。精華町の姉妹都市であるノーマン市があるアメリカ合衆国のオクラホマ州は、ネイティブアメリカンの人口が多いため、ドリームキャッチャーのような伝統的な芸術が大きな影響を与えています。ノーマン市の人々はよく、ドリームキャッチャーを家や車などに飾ります。子どもたちと一緒に、楽しいドリームキャッチャー作りを通しノーマン市の文化に触れることができて、とてもよかったです。たった１０分では子どもたちにノーマン市とネイティブアメリカンの文化との関係についてたくさんのことを教えることはできませんが、１つの新しいことだけでも覚えて帰ってもらえたら嬉しいなと思いました。　　

　

　こども祭りは、子どもたちが色々なゲームや体験を行うことができ、本当に素晴らしいと思います。子どもたちはとても愛らしくて、一緒に遊ぶことはとても楽しかったです。本当に楽しく忘れられない１日となりました。

Farmer Jon

The other month, while talking with a friend of mine who tends to many different gardens of his own, I mentioned that I had always had an interest in trying to grow my own vegetables, but had never gotten around to actually doing it. After hearing this, he offered to lend me a section of one of his gardens! I figured now is as good a time as ever to try my hand at farming and took him up on his offer, and on Sunday, August 30th, I planted cabbage, Chinese cabbage, and daikon seeds, and sprouting potatoes. I can’t wait to check up on their progress each week!

先月、いくつかの畑の所有する友達と話していたときに、私が昔から自分で野菜を栽培することに興味を持っているけど、何となく実際にやらなかったと言いました。これを聞いて、友達が畑の畝の一部を貸してあげると言ってくれたのです！せっかくの機会なので、友達の言葉を受けて、8月30日（日）にキャベツ、ハクサイ、そしてダイコンの種をまいて、ジャガイモも植えました。毎週、成長を見に行くのがとても楽しみです！
